PRESENTATION DESCRIPTIONS

"Exploring the Pacific Ocean and Beyond in Pursuit of Plastic: A discussion about plastic pollution, science and solutions”

Science writer and artist Erica Cirino has sailed across the most polluted part of the eastern Pacific Ocean, to remote reaches of the South Pacific Ocean and around Iceland; observed the work of plastic pollution science pioneers in California; documented the most polluted beach in Hawaii; met with world-class scientists in Denmark and Western New York; visited some of the most degraded ecosystems in Asia, the South Pacific, and the Caribbean, as well as the people working to clean them. Her purpose: Find out the truths about plastic pollution and what it’s doing to the planet, wildlife and people. Erica shares her testimony as a journalist during her presentation, "Exploring the Pacific Ocean and Beyond in Pursuit of Plastic," a part of her "Go and See Tour" project which is funded in part by a Safina Center "Kalpana Chawla Launchpad Fellowship." She is also available to give class field trips and marine debris art workshops for young people ages 5 and up.

In addition to her presentation “Exploring the Pacific Ocean and Beyond in Pursuit of Plastic,” Erica presents on other stories she’s covered as a journalist and experiences she’s had as a wildlife rehabilitator. These include specialized presentations on birds and plastic, whales and plastic, wildlife rehabilitation and the persecution of wolves worldwide. See her selection of upcoming and past lectures below:

“Tales of a Wildlife Rehabilitator”

Erica Cirino gives us a peek into the life of a wildlife rehabilitator, nursing sick, injured and orphaned wildlife back to health for eventual return into the wild. She will elaborate on the threats posed especially by plastic pollution and other human-caused harms in light of the May 2019 U.N. extinction report, which painted a bleak outlook on life for Earth’s nonhuman beings–due to human actions. While rehabilitating individual wild animals may not correct the extinction crisis, Erica explains how it can bring attention to its causes and the implications that has for life on Earth. She has worked in the field as a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for 11 years with 7 of those years spent in the clinical setting. Learn how to best help wildlife in need, along with some tricks of the wildlife rehabilitation trade.

“Rethinking the Big, Bad Wolf”

Erica Cirino has traveled to remote corners of New Mexico in search of the United States’ most endangered wolf: the Mexican gray. Along the way, she learned about wolves’ bad reputation in the U.S. and worldwide has led to its widespread persecution and demise. Today, thanks to conservation plans and rules against hunting, wolves are making a comeback in some areas. As that happens, wildlife managers struggle to emphasize the positive aspects of wolves' return because long-seated human fears about wolves—perpetuated by children’s fairy-tale books and films, and in other media—persist to this day and make people skeptical of the fact that wolves are a critical part of nature that deserve protection. In Europe, wildlife managers are attempting to break the stereotype of the “big, bad wolf” by designing an innovative approach to public attitudes improvement around wolves by holding public meetings where community members can voice their concerns and get their questions answered. In her presentation, Erica will tell her stories from the field, including her expedition looking for endangered wolves in New Mexico, attending wolf community meetings in Europe and more.
